ALLEGHENY NATIONAL FOREST FALL FOLIAGE LOOP (96.0 miles)
Back to the wild ride on the Allegheny National Forest Loop, the domain of deer, bear, bobcat and coyote. Beginning in Bradford, Pennsylvania head south on Route 219, turn right onto Route 6 at Lantz Corners, traveling west to Kane. Entering Kane, turn right onto Route 321. Turn left onto the Longhouse National Scenic Byway. This narrow, winding road follows high above the Kinzua Arm of the Allegheny Reservoir. Traveling to the crest turn left at Jakes Rocks for amazing views of the Allegheny Reservoir.
Continue around the one-way loop past views at Kinzua Point, turn right onto Rt. 59 to cross Morrison Bridge. A sign marks the access road to Rimrock Overlook a great vantage point with hiking trails. Back at Route 59, turn hard left where Route 321 forks away. Route 321 drops into the valley of Sugar Run, passing the head of a large bay of the Allegheny Reservoir, then climbs to Tracy Ridge, part of a National Recreation Area, providing miles of tree lined two lane paved winding roads. At the intersection with Route 346, turn right to return to Bradford.

From Williamsport, in Lycoming County go south on US 220 to PA 287. Go north to Wellsboro in Tioga County for some of the best mountain foliage in Pennsylvania! On the way you can stop at Tioga Trail Rides and do the Grand Canyon area on horseback for an hour or for three days. We did a half a day last year in the fall and loved every minute of it!

RECOMMENDED by the Pennsylvania Visitors Network
US Route 6 is one of the most splendid scenic drives in the country in any season. For fall in Pennsylvania find Route 6 from just about anywhere in northern Pa. Good to start in Towanda (Bradford County) and drive east, or Warren in Warren County and drive west. These directions assume travel from east to west. In Wellsboro, take a detour across PA 660 to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. For the last five years American Bald Eagles were sighted here. Back on the highway head toward Coudersport where you may want to stay at the Susquehannock Lodge for hiking, mountain biking and snowmobiling trail maps from Ed. You are now in Potter County so be sure to check out what's going on! On to McKean County (SEE ABOVE) and then head into the Allegheny National Forest and Warren County. For the whole trip you will be in rural, mountainous Pennsylvania. You will not only enjoy the spectacular foliage but, if you don't see any wildlife it's because you're driving with your eyes closed. Whether you do this whole tour, or only part of it, take your camera and look at the most beautiful autumn foliage in America! For free print brochures on Route 6 visit Tioga County Tourist Bureau site and look for the Route 6 page.
NORTHCENTRAL PA
Find PA Route 44 off of US 220 between Jersey Shore and Lock Haven. Take 44 North. Your goal is Coudersport in Potter County. You will follow Pine Creek for awhile and go through several small towns with quaint shops. After awhile the towns fade away and the road narrows. You'll be up in the mountains where, occasionally the trees will part and you will get some magnificent views. When you hit Sweden Valley hook a left to Coudersport where you can take a break to eat. Next, head east on US Route 6 back over to Wellsboro where you will find PA 287. Head south on PA 287 to Morris where you pick up the best part of this drive...PA 414. This road is narrow and at times turns into dirt... but is well worth it because it follows the Pine Creek back down to Route 44 (just about where you started. In our opinion this is one of the best drives in the state.

The Elk Herd
One of our favorite driving loops runs through Elk County and Cameron County. We start in Saint Marys and head east on PA 120 driving through the mountains to Emporium and then on to the little town of Driftwood on the Sinnemahoning Creek. In Driftwood we find PA 555 and take it west to PA 255 which runs right back up to Saint Marys. Loop takes about 2.5 hours and goes right through the heart of Pennsylvania's elk herd.
