Cambria County was created on March 26, 1804, from parts of Huntingdon, Somerset and Bedford Counties and named for Cambria Township of Somerset County. Cambria is an ancient name for Wales. Ebensburg, the county seat, was named by Reverend Rees Lloyd for his eldest and deceased son, Eben.
There is a wonderful blend of the past and present in Cambria County. As the county evolved from the time of its settlement by trappers and farmers, the county's rich natural resources and its geographic location allowed it to take a leading role in enabling Pennsylvania to become a national industrial leader.

mountains and cool, clean air caused Cambria to become a tourist center in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. More than a century later, the county has come full circle as visitors trek here for history and for fun. Visitors can take in the mountain splendor during any of four glorious seasons while exploring the rich industrial and social heritage which has been wonderfully preserved in a unique mix with modern entertainment, cultural and recreational opportunities and accommodations.

Mountain bikers can take to the many gameland roads and snowmobile trails for an exhilarating ride across the ridges and through the valleys of the Southern Alleghenies.
