The rich soil of Berks, aided by a favorable climate and centralized Mid-Atlantic location, has contributed to a strong agrarian tradition. Today, agriculture, both in terms of food production and processing, is the county's No. 1 industry.

The outlet industry, which has its roots in Reading, remains so strong that Reading/Berks has been coined as "The Original Outlet Capital of the World." Tourism, generated by the county's heritage, arts and culture as well as shopping opportunities, injects millions of dollars annually into the local economy.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineer built and maintains the Blue Marsh Lake, a project designed to provide flood control, an enormous reservoir of drinking water, and extensive recreational opportunities. The State of Pennsylvania maintains the heavily forested, scenic hills of French Creek State Park.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a wild bird sanctuary in Albany Township and East Brunswick Township, located along the Appalachian flyway in eastern Pennsylvania. The sanctuary is a prime location for the viewing of kettling and migrating raptors with an average of 20,000 hawks, eagles and falcons passing the lookouts during the late summer and fall every year.

The Kutztown Folk Festival is the oldest continuously operated folklife festival in America. This nine-day event continues to draw visitors from all over the world, entertaining families while providing valuable insight into the traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch and their fascinating way of life. This unusual nine-day festival had been featured twice in National Geographic and has been called "one of the most unique festivals on the East coast" by the Washington Post, with good reason. It usually starts the last week of June every year.
